Reflection We are extremely humbled by the opportunity to collaborate with Girls Build LA and having such a huge impact at Peary Middle School. The journey began with the notion that Health and Fitness needed to be highlighted as a motivational tool. In the beginning, the team being new to the program, was uncertain of the initial direction. The goal was to brainstorm ideas and get a consensus of what issues are affecting girls on our campus. Without hesitation, the team decided on Health and Fitness, incorporating self-esteem, cancer awareness and anti-bullying as specifics. The planning was now underway and as the site coordinator, I couldn’t be more proud of the effort that the team made. We began with just our leadership team, but after making the first open call to all girls, the commitment was overwhelming. We had 40 girls attend weekly meetings where we continued to plan, organize and give input on how to improve our fitness and social development. The most dynamic thing was for 40 girls to attend the Leadership Summit and hear such inspirational women, this is where we took another positive turn. The Cancer and Peace Walk, indeed was something that we can say, “Job well done.” At the end of this journey, our fitness challenge was such a viable tool, that we are choosing to continue to contest till the end of May. We truly appreciate our administration, teachers, community and staff for the outpouring support at our events or just their words of encouragement. We hope to continue a long lasting relationship with LA Promise organization and building up our girls to be the next leaders of tomorrow. We are now closer to our “Steps to Success.” Go Huskies!!! Sincerely, Girls Build LA Team
